So when Dermalogica announced their latest innovation in skin health I was somewhat excited but skeptical too – motion-activated essential oils – really? I mean come on. It’s a skin cream right. But as someone who has always had broken sleep I was looking forward to testing it out.
Good sleep is a critical part of our skin health. Night-time is when our skin works actively to repair cell damage; and poor sleep habits contribute to accelerated skin ageing. So improving our sleep through a skin-care product seems like a great idea. But does it actually work?
The first night
I applied the lightweight gel-cream to my face and neck over my normal night-time moisturiser (Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance). I was pleasantly surprised by the calming scent of the essential oils – French lavender, patchouli and sandalwood. It certainly felt like a luxurious skin treat. I also noticed how any movement from my head and neck re-activated the scent (in fact I had to purposely stop myself from swinging my head about to get a fix it was that good).
And then I woke up. I had completely forgotten about my new night cream. I commented to my husband on what a good nights sleep I had and then carried on with my day. It wasn’t until later in the morning that I remembered having used Sound Sleep Cocoon and I wondered if that had been the difference in my improved sleep.
Three nights later
I am amazed at how it has improved the quality of my sleep. I have slept solidly every night, with no waking up periodically, tossing and turning, or stirring at the slightest movement from the husband (or pooches straying from their bed baskets). And my skin is looking and feeling more hydrated and plumped than normal (although a one-hour skin treatment at Belmont salon this week with the lovely Gemma may have something to do with that).
Dermalogica have also partnered with NuCalm to create an app that supports a good night’s sleep. It includes a heavenly sleep soundtrack as well as other great tips and advice to aid you getting a great nights rest. You can access the app here.
Verdict from me – Sound Sleep Cocoon gets the big thumbs up.
